What are the issues with standard cotton?

Firstly, we recap some of the existing problems with the standard cottons most brands opt for.

• Above all, cotton is known as the 'thirsty crop', requiring thousands of litres of water per kilogram of cotton made. When this combines with cotton growing being concentrated in water-stressed regions, the problem grows.
• As well as using plenty of water, cotton also requires considerable amounts of pesticides, which can damage the environment and crop quality, infect local water sources, and can harm animals and wildlife.
• Finally, cotton-production can be a harmful process for the people involved, with risks including forced labour and child labour, poisoning from contaminated food and water supplies, and physical injury from the manual labour.

When farmers and local communities have to deal with these added costs, risks and harms, standard cotton becomes an unfeasible and unsustainable fabric to rely on for our clothes, home-wear, and deco. That's why we at Yawn opt for a bespoke organic cotton. 

What is organic cotton?

In comparison to standard cotton, then, organic cotton is a more sustainable alternative fabric, the production and use of which has a minimised impact on the environment. The organic cotton we choose at Yawn is certified by Global Organic Textile Standard; our GOTS-certified cotton guarantees:

• Factories have functioning wastewater treatment plants to protect local ecosystems and water supplies
• Inputs in processing the fabric comply with strict biodegradability and toxicity requirements, meanwhile the products do not contain any allergenic, carcinogenic or toxic chemical residues
• Core International Labour Organisation (ILO) conventions are met throughout manufacture and a social compliance management system

Organic cotton is hard to come by; only about 0.7% of the cotton available in the marketplace is organic. To be a part of it, brands need to place sizeable orders with suppliers - no mean feat for a small business. So why go the extra mile? Every time we purchase our organic cotton from the mills in India that we work with, our GOTS certification ensures:

• Organic cotton is grown without the use of toxic and persistent pesticides, and synthetic fertilizers
• Soil is nurtured through farming methods such as crop rotation, composting and mulching, which retains moisture in the soil making it viable in the long term
• GOTS prohibits the use of GM (genetically modified) seeds meaning it gives control back to the farmers who are free to save seeds and choose what they grow - normal cotton seeds are controlled by GM giants
