How to sleep in hot weather

Warm weather can be joyous in the daytime, but less than ideal when it comes to trying to sleep. For everyone who’s tried finding the cold side of the pillow too many nights in a row, we’ve listed Yawn’s favourite tips and tricks for getting a good night’s sleep in hot weather.

1. Fill a hot water bottle with icey water

Despite what its name might suggest… a hot water bottle needn’t be hot. By filling a rubber hot water bottle with crushed ice and cold water, you’ve created the perfect nighttime cooling pack. Place the pack behind your neck, on your lower back, or behind your knees for the best cooling results.

2. Put a bowl of ice in front of your fan

A fan can be an amazing summer apparatus - however, if the air in your bedroom is already warm, you may find the fan simply pushes warm air around rather than having any effect on temperature. Putting a bowl of ice in front of the fan will create a cool breeze by pushing around the cold emitted by the ice.

    3. Use lightweight bed linen or sheets

It might sound obvious, but most duvets were not designed for summer sleeping. However, if you’re used to sleeping with a duvet, trying to sleep without cover is nearly impossible.

Opting for lightweight bed linen - or just using a sheet instead of a duvet - can help you feel comfortable and covered for sleep, without adding too much unnecessary heat.

    4. Wear breathable cotton pyjamas

Natural fabrics, like organic cotton, are ideal for warm weather as they are breathable and allow air to circulate freely. Therefore heat can escape the body and you’re body is able to cool naturally.

      5. Draw the curtains in the day

Trying to cool a warm room is much harder than trying to keep a room cool. Whilst you’re out of the room during the daytime, keep the curtains drawn to stop sunlight from entering and warming the air in your bedroom.

It's not easy acclimatising your sleep patterns to hot weather, so we hope these tips and tricks help you get the rest you deserve this summer.
