Dreamer | Yawn meets Lara, Scentered Founder

Yawn was lucky enough to talk to Scentered Founder, Lara, to find out what drew her to launch Scentered and her top tips on how to relax.

What drew you to launch Scentered?

When you find yourself gripping the arms of a chair just to lift your body and trying to breathe more deeply, you know something's not right. It's a clear reminder that we should never put our health and wellness second. I managed to push myself incredibly hard while building my first company and, frankly, got away with it.

The Stop. Inhale. Reset. mantra came out of an “exchange of views” between my mum and I —with what some might call a heated argument driven by her concern. It was this, combined with my own experience, that sparked the idea for our portable, convenient aromatherapy balms. They allow anyone to create a personal wellness ritual, wherever and whenever needed, providing a quick mindset boost that’s easy to carry and use throughout the day.

What role do you think scent and aromatherapy can play in helping women relax and slow down?

Aromatherapy isn’t just about enjoying a nice smell. It's about creating moments of mindfulness. Certain essential oils, like lavender or chamomile, are scientifically proven to calm the nervous system, which is exactly what we need when we're running on adrenaline. When you incorporate a scent ritual into your day—whether it's using a balm before a stressful meeting or lighting a candle during a quiet evening—you’re creating a deliberate pause.

As your mum was an aromatherapist, did you recognise the role of blending scent s to keep control of stress from an early age?

No, not at all. In fact, quite the opposite—I hadn’t shown much interest in natural remedies early on, though I was impressed by homeopathy. I remember using a grain of arnica to heal a bruise from a hockey game, so I understood its impact. But it wasn’t until I became a mother that I truly began seeking out natural solutions for everyday ailments.

Even now, at the first sign of a cold, I turn to Vitamin C and Echinacea. I firmly believe in using natural remedies when possible, and in simply eating well. It’s all about balance and moderation, even with the things I know aren’t as good for me.

What is your favourite scent and why?

My favourite blend is Escape. It’s the one I turn to when I need to mentally step away, even if I can’t physically escape. Life is so fast-paced, and this blend of oud, frankincense, and sandalwood helps me create a moment of calm and perspective. It grounds me and gives me the space to breathe, refocus, and feel recharged. For me, Escape is a reminder to take a break, reconnect with myself, and come back stronger.

Which women inspire you most and why?

My mum. I don’t think I need to say more.

In a world where many women are feeling stretched do you have any other tips for our audience on switching off?

For the last 25 years, if not longer, I’ve been focused on efficiency and effectiveness in the pursuit of real-life balance. The turning point came with the birth of my eldest daughter, first of my three children. That’s when I became truly committed to achieving a genuine balance. One thing I do right is holidays—properly. I also make sure to carve out time to exercise, and as I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to embrace moments of walking mid-run to gain perspective and gift myself some much-needed me-time.

Other tips? Block out time in your diary—schedule time for life. At the start of each year, plan the balance of how much time you want to dedicate to personal development, family, key individuals, and maybe even your community or other priorities. Then, review it regularly to stay on track. It’s all about intention and making space for what truly matters in your life.

When and where are you at your most relaxed and happy?

In Scotland or Sri Lanka with any family members, a few days to switch off.

How do you switch off and what are the tools and techniques that have helped you?

Cycling has become a huge part of my life, thanks to a charitable cause that has truly transformed me in countless ways. Through www.ride25.com, a group of remarkable people and I have cycled from Marlow in Bucks all the way to Azerbaijan, raising over £1 million for 1morechild (www.1morechild.com).

Staying fit is essential for me year-round, and while it’s not always biking, last night I ran around a loch—feeling like a gazelle, or so I tell myself! When I run, I often think of Paula Radcliffe, who’s a shareholder in my other business, KitBrix.com and helped us develop two fantastic products—ToteBrix and TotePack by KitBrix. Having great gear is key to being ready to exercise, and that’s part of the secret.

Other techniques I use are more about maintaining structure and efficiency. I stay super organised—no tripping over things—and always start my day hydrated with 750ml of water, sometimes before even getting out of bed. Until recently, I used to unwind with the news between work and bedtime, but I’ve stopped that since it’s too negative. Now I flip through magazines in the evening instead. I also use our Sleep Well balm 30 minutes before bed to kickstart my nightly routine.

As for life hacks, I’ve built in time-savers all day, every day. I’ve simplified everything—minimal makeup, no unnecessary stuff to carry, and a deliberate, well-planned approach to life. My day and work revolve around the diary, which is essential, and so is my EA, who helps keep everything on track. Trusting my team is also key—without them, I’d be lost. There are so many factors, but they all work together to help me make the most of life.

What is your bedtime routine?

Hideously, but honestly, I shut the laptop, apply Sleep Well balm, and tackle the kitchen if I’m home, putting away dinner things, tidying up, and prepping for the next day. I make sure my phone’s plugged in, the laptop’s charged, and the water bottles filled and chilling in the fridge. Teeth brushed, jewellery off, strip down, and into bed, often asleep before my head even hits the pillow. Oddly, I only wear PJs when I’m travelling—what’s that about?

Quick - fire questions:

Top book on your reading list?

Ravenous, recommended Henry Dimbleby also recommended by Tim Spector whom I respect.

Favourite song to relax to?

Elbow almost anything or Coldplay

Favourite podcast?

None, but whilst travelling and living as a digital nomad in the USA I have been listening to the Rest is Politics and The News Agents.

Pyjamas or night-shirt or nightdress?

Generally stark naked, grew up in Asia where it is super-hot – not sure if that’s why. When I am knackered, sick or travelling, the nightie or PJ’s goes on.

Nightcap or night cream?

Neither. Nightcap a poor habit and I do not drink much, less so now with menopause as any sugar is a killer. Night Cream, I do not do any creams. I do not believe in them. I do a singular Face oil, irregularly, I make more of an effort when in a dry climate, but I am sceptical about skin interference.
